SCUML Registration for Law Firms in Nigeria: The Step-by-Step Guide (2026)

SCUML registration is a major headache for many law firms. Here is a simple, stress-free guide on how to register your Nigerian law firm with the EFCC in 2026.

If you've recently opened a law firm account with any Nigerian bank, you already know the drill. Before the bank lets you do any serious transactions, they will hit you with four dreaded letters: SCUML.

The Special Control Unit Against Money Laundering (SCUML) operates under the EFCC. Because law firms handle large sums of client money (especially in real estate and corporate transactions), the government categorizes us as Designated Non-Financial Institutions (DNFIs). This means you must be registered.

A lot of lawyers get frustrated because their SCUML applications keep getting rejected. But it’s actually not that hard if you have the right documents. Here is how to get it done smoothly in 2026.

Step 1: Get Your CAC Documents Ready Before you even visit the SCUML portal, make sure your firm is fully registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). If you registered as a Business Name, you need your Certificate of Registration and your Status Report (the document showing the proprietor's details).

Step 2: Prepare the Specific "Lawyer" Documents SCUML requires proof that you are actually a licensed lawyer. You will need: Your Call to Bar Certificate. Your current NBA Practicing Fee receipt. Your NBA Stamp and Seal. Your means of ID (NIN, Driver’s License, or International Passport).

Step 3: Head to the Portal-( https://scuml.efcc.gov.ng/) Go to the official SCUML website. Click on the registration tab. You will be asked to fill in your firm's details, the BVN of the proprietor/partners, and upload the documents we mentioned above.

Pro Tip: Make sure your document sizes aren't too large (keep them under 2MB) and ensure they are very clear. Blurry uploads are the number one reason applications get rejected.

Step 4: The Waiting Game Once you hit submit, you will get an acknowledgement email. SCUML processing times vary, but if all your documents are correct, you should get your certificate within a few weeks. The best part? The certificate is now digital, so they will email it straight to you.

Why You Shouldn't Ignore This Aside from the fact that banks won't let you operate your account properly, failing to comply with SCUML regulations can result in heavy fines or even the freezing of your firm's accounts by the EFCC.
